Why Do We Love Cute Stationery So Much?
One of my favorite things about starting a new semester was shopping for school supplies.
New notebooks. Fresh pens. Colorful folders. A planner that made me feel like I had my entire life together.
Even now, one of my favorite sections of any store is the stationery and school-supply aisle. Give me a wall of colorful notebooks and cute pens and suddenly I have 14 things I apparently need.
So why do we love this stuff so much?
It's More Than Just “Pretty”
There’s a reason environmental psychology has long been interested in how we interact with the spaces around us.
Our surroundings can influence how we experience a space, and research has found that things like personalization and having some control over our environment can be connected to greater satisfaction and well-being.
This is something I became especially interested in while studying architecture (yup, before Purrfect Little Art). My thesis explored how even small changes to a space could help create a greater sense of ownership.
Now, I believe stationery works in a surprisingly similar way.
A notebook isn't just a notebook when you choose the one with your favorite color, pattern, or little illustration. That's why you at least compare a few before choosing one.
It becomes yours.
The Joy of Making Things “Yours”
I saw this in the workplace when I worked as an architectural designer.
Our office had a supply closet, and I genuinely loved checking it out. New pens? Yes please. Fresh notebooks? Absolutely.
But one day, during a meeting, this one coworker from another team brought the coolest pens with some exotic colors and tips. She said she bought her own because the standard office stuff just wasn't cute enough. And so it dawned on me, just because we've moved from student to professional doesn't mean we have to leave our beloved stationery behind.
Also, you might be able to run it as a work expense, but please do your research on that.
Stationery is functional, but it can also be expressive.
Your planner can be colorful.
Your notes can live on a ridiculous little notepad.
Your favorite pen can make an otherwise boring Tuesday feel slightly less boring.
The task hasn't changed.
But your experience of doing it can.
And Then There's the “New Supplies” Feeling
Let's be honest: there is a special kind of optimism that comes with a brand new notebook.
Suddenly, we're organized.
We're productive.
We're definitely going to keep our life together this semester.
...at least until page 17.
But that little burst of excitement is part of the fun. Choosing objects we genuinely enjoy can make ordinary routines feel more personal and inviting.
And you don't need to be a student to enjoy it.
A cute desk setup. A favorite pen. A colorful planner. A notepad you actually want to use.
These little things don't have to transform your productivity.
They just have to make the everyday a little more enjoyable.

Whatever your style, there's something pretty wonderful about surrounding yourself with little things that feel like you.

Because we don't think a notepad is going to change your life.
We just think little things matter.
